What does it mean when your Army boyfriend gives you his dog tags?

Heart of GOLD asked:

He’s been to war, been shot at and come home. He’s now a reserve but could be sent back any minute. The other day he gave me his dog tags… what does that signify? Anything in particular like a promise or engagement ring? He’s been talking a lot about marriage in the last couple of days…

Maybe it’s your engagement ring. He will be needing those tags back if he is still in the reserves.

it signifies that he cares about you and that he wants you to have a permanent part of him. but its not an engagement present unless he proposes honey

I think that it means that he values you as much as his own life.

Dog tags are basically the only identity that a soldier has if they’ve been killed on the battlefield. It is a great honor.

That being said… I lost my own husbands dog tags when we were first dating :-( I was trying on clothes right before a store closed, and left them in the fitting room. I tried to call right after they closed, no one answered. I was there when they opened the next morning, and they said that their cleaning people had not seen a thing. Liars…
Whatever…. I’ve worked as a janitor too, so I’m not that quick to accuse them…
Anyways. I assume that some illegal Mexican Missourian is now going by my husbands name.
We had new dog tags printed, and he never takes them off… EVER…

All I can say, is DO NOT TAKE THEM OFF for ANY reason!!! Even if for a minute, they can be lost, or left behind. They are very important to him. Consider it a great honor.

The whole loss is still very depressing. I let him down when I took them off and lost them. It’s like losing a wedding ring… except much more important.

If he’s given you his dog tags he cares for you, a LOT…
That means that he has pretty much the same commitment to you that a man has to his wife, regardless of whether you choose to reciprocate or not.
Wow..
That’s really sweet :-) You are a lucky woman.

feel honored, it means he cares enough about you to trust you. thats big. it has his ss# for petes sake. but dont consider it an engagement or otherwise, its just a very heartfelt and thoughtful gift.

it shows that he cares and trusts you and that he wants you to have a part of him.
