How do I get replacement Naval dog tags?

My father passed away in 1986 and I now have the flag from his funeral. I want to order a case for it and I thought it would be nice if I could get a copy of his dog tags from when he was in the Navy. Where would I go to get replacements? Do I contact the Navy?

…You could get them online. They’re not official, but they look exactly like military issued dog tags. I got a set for my daughter. They’re inexpensive, too. Just google dog tags.

You can try to have some made at an Army-Navy surplus store. They can print out a pair with anything you want printed on them.

You can get them made in an authentic style or you can have something else like:

In Loving Memory
Not Forgotten

And put what you want on them. If it is for a memorial that might be appropriate..but it is totally up to you.

Most of the stores that make dog tags make them so well that actual military members buy them. I lost a set once and bought my own. It was easier than having my official channels do it and it was faster and a little cheaper….and they looked the same. I found my originals and now I have more than one set and can not tell them apart.

You can probably get a set from a surplus store or an online adventure store like US Cav, Ranger Joe’s or Blackhawk.

You will need his name, service number, blood type and religion.

I doubt the Navy will make you a replacement set.
