Dog tags for people who are not in the service?
Maggi M asked:
I wanted to get my boyfriend dog tags for a gift. He’s mentioned it before, but I guess I’ve been hesitating. In all honesty- do people in the service look down upon people who wear them just to wear them for reasons that don’t actually serve a purpose?

If not, what kind of information usually goes on a dog tag?
Thanks, looking forward to your answers

I was in the Navy, and I never looked down on someone who had dog tags if they weren’t in the military. The usual information is full name, social security, branch of service, and religion. You may just want to get his name, since the rest may not apply.
I wasn’t in the service so I can answer the first question, but when I bought my husband a dog tag I had pictures of our children etched on it.
Frankly, I’m not a fan of dog tags for people who are out of the service. I don’t have a problem with it for honoring serviceman, but for people who get them made to appear to have been in the service. I was in the service, and my kids have dog tags with information on them.
Dog tags were created to identify soldiers who have been killed in action. They are not to be displayed, do not list rank and are for identification purposes only.
If you choose to proceed- my military issued dog tags have:
Last Name
First name MI
Social Security Number
Blood Type
Religious Preference
get him a collar with a chain
one of those glow in the dark kind so you can find him at night
I would get your boyfriend dog tags that has information on it that’s different than a serviceman’s.
You could put his name, a special phrase between you guys, maybe the date of an important anniversary (first date, first kiss, etc.) Like another mentioned, you can get pictures on dog tags.
You shouldn’t do it. As the other answerer said they are used for identifying the body of a fallen serviceman/woman
You could get him a really nice watch and have it engraved or an ID bracelet.
