wait so uhm. im joining the NG. what happends if i lose my dogtags? i actualy plan on giveing them to my GF but ima tell them i lost them so what happens do i get another pair or am i just fucked?
The M is for medium, its the gas mask size.

oh, also, gas masks are NOT universal. They are fitted to your face, and they have to be fit tested every few months (fiscally for my unit) as some peoples faces grow, shrink, etc. I know it’s hard to believe or accept, but you don’t want to put your life on the line if you’re a small and someone hands you a medium. Particulates do seep in rather easily if you have the wrong size mask.
Your father is wrong, OR, he was in a loooong time ago. When I was in in ‘94 on, the format was:
-Last Name
-First and middle initials,blood group
-Social Security Number
- Branch (”USMC”)
- Gas Mask size (S-small, M-medium, L-large)
- Religion
Reason: tags aren’t just for identifying a body. If you’re succumbing to chemical agents and your mask is unavailable, they’ll be to find one that’ll fit. No US branch has gender on dog tags. It’s not practical or pertinent info.
My memory is very fuzzy on this, but if I recall we got our dog tags fairly early during bootcamp (maybe end of first phase). They come with silencers. I think we had 2 sets, because I recall giving a pair to my girlfriend at the time (gay). At the time (I was in ‘94-2000), we had to wear them while on duty. Now, I’m serving in the Air National Guard, and you never wear your dogtags, not even on deployment. (gay)
I have a question, if your in the Marines how long do you have to wait to get your dog tags? And are you supposed to ask for silencers?

my dad is a former marine he says the m means male f female, dogs tags are there for if ur injured or killed in cobat,theyll know ur info now wat the hell would they need to know ur gas mask size if ur friggin blown ta bits? i bet everyone here is just followin what others r sayin u wouldnt have ur shoe size on ur damn dog tag now would u? gas masks are adjustable, ur last name is followed by initials they cant tell if ur male or female thats why its there ex linzo.M.L.then usmc “M” meaning male

well also if somthing goes BOOM and you get mangled to the point it just looks like mince meat in an army uniform they check out your dog tags and say: “hey guys I found ……..(name)” or if you loose lots of blood and need some the dog tag sayz it all!
Fix your dog tags. Sometimes they put the wrong church denomination on your tags.I am a christian.I don’t want to be read my last rights buy a catholic because they think I am a catholic. It’s okay because they are praying for you but some people take their religion seriously.
