What does it mean when a man gives you his military dog tags?

Recently, a man gave me his dog tags from his time in the military. Does this mean anything? Is there any significance I can attach to this event? I am not sure if anyone that’s been in the military might be able to shed some light on the significance. I thought this was a symbol of love but am not sure. Any insights you can provide would be appreciated.

Thanks for all the responses! He’s been out of the military a while and I am sure he isn’t suicidal.

He’s quite special to me so it does make sense. I just wasn’t sure if there was a deeper meaning or something I was missing. It sounds like my inclinations are correct that I should feel very honored. Thanks again!
