Military yumyumchef asked: I heard that the notch is so that when a soldier is killed in action, the dog tags are supposed to be placed in the mouth between the front teeth and a soldier is to kick the jaw of the deceased in order to wedge the dogtag into place. This was supposed to prevent the accidental loss or separation of the dog tags from the deceased.
